Week #6 Distribution. July 19 [B week]

Unloading Greig Berry share @ the Wood

How I LUV berry season! Besides being uber-delicious, berries are one of the best nutritional bargains around. High in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, these yummy nuggets of flavor not only contribute to overall health, but may even help prevent cancer and heart disease, as well as slowing the aging process. Thanks to our marvelous farmer Norman the Southside CSA has been hooked up with one of the greatest shares ever!!! Feeling rather lucky to have fresh, local blueberries for breakfast, lunch, dinner & snackage! Not much is more refreshing on these hot & sticky days than a mouthful of frozen blueberries! (I fear blueberry withdrawal when this share ends in September!!) We are still working on a Berry post so send us your pics, recipes, and tips. Also planning a couple of farm trips out to both Grieg Farm & MimoMex. Of course, anytime you are in the red hook/hudson valley area, you should stop by and pick your own!!

We had a bit of a snafu with the Veggie share, running out of zucchini about mid-way through distribution. We didn’t have a master list and somehow got confused regarding the poundage of the squash. We had thought the share amount was 2lbs of zukes. Unfortunately, we realized too late that the amount was most likely just 1 lb….. Lo siento to every share family that didn’t get their weekly dose of summer squash! Lil screw ups like this are part of the reality of grassroot grocery shopping. As organizers we will work real hard to make sure it doesn’t happen again (but no promises since things can get hectic and life, esp csa management, can be messy!)

  • 2 Spanish Onions
  • 1 head Celery
  • 1 head Red Leaf Lettuce
  • 1 head Romaine Lettuce
  • 1 Leek

    poaching lemongrass...
  • 1 bunch Kale
  • 1 bunch Rosemary
  • 1 bunch Mint

MimoMex Orchard Share

Week 2 of the orchard share was rocking! Loving those stone fruits, loving local fruit!

  • 1 lb White Peach
  • 1 lb Peach
  • 1 lb Caviar Plums
  • 1 lb Vampire Plums

Vampire Plums are a Japanese variety which are gaining popularity in the region due to their hardiness in cold weather. Gotta love that red flesh! I am assuming that the Caviar plums are a european variety since those tend to be smaller. So far my research on both varieties has not yielded much information…..if you know anything, please send the info this way. Our White Peach is a medium to large peach with creamy white skin that is blushed red. The white, juicy flesh has a distinctive flavor. These babies are known to be good for canning. Our other peach is a bit of a mystery. Go to it Southside Sleuths!

Haven’t really done anything with these gorgeous babies but mow mow mow. BUT some of my favorite seasonal dishes are accented with peaches and plums. Besides, there is nothing better than a homemade plum sauce! We are working on peach and plum posts. As always, send us your endeavors so we can share them.
