Week #13 – Sept 6 Labor Day [A Week]

Norman Greig, our Berry Farmer

While Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of Summer, we would like to dedicate some thought and reflection in our little blog to farm workers the world over, and in particular those who are still fighting to be paid a living wage to harvest the food that our strong nation thrives on.

Martin & Mimo, our Veg & Egg farmers

Our consumer consciousness can help ensure justice for farmworkers. Stay informed. Shop carefully. Vote with your pocketbook and buy food that is rooted in a fair trade for the people who pick it. Learning about the atrocious situation behind Florida tomatoes presents yet another sound reason to try to eat seasonally and locally year round (Winter Share, hint hint). Whether it was exploitation by the “robber barons” of the nineteenth century and the segregationists of the Jim Crow South, or in our modern times, the growers who use migrant farm laborers and the agribusiness interests that squeeze and impoverish small farmers, the fight for justice and labor rights is rooted in the land and will continue to be impacted by our actions far off in the city…

Anyways, time to get off the soapbox and just thank you for being a member of our CSA and thereby supporting justice for farmworkers.

Labor Day was another great distribution and another lovely night at the Woods! We missed all you lovely folks who were vacationing, like our lovely co-conspirator Esther, but I have to say that the bonus was the huge donation of fresh food we were able to deliver to the Southside Mission Pantry. (Thnx to Liz & Paul for driving @ the last minute! U rule!) Your donations make a big difference to combat hunger in the hood…
