WAHOO! Week 1 and it’s a blast off! Thanks to everyone that has joined, from OG members that are celebrating 10 SEASONS!!! with us to the new members that are waiting to see what Southside CSA is all about! Welcome to the 2019 Harvest season!! THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING LOCAL FARMS & GRASSROOT GROCERIES!!

Every year we launch with a yummy blast of local asparagus! Our BERRY Share always kicks off with 4 weeks of local asparagus. This year we have added a stand -alone ASPARAGUS share for those who need more GRASS in their life! We also see the start of our EGG, WHOLE CHICKEN, FISH, MEAT, & BONE BROTH shares.

SO it was a cold cold week before our first distribution. This directly affected the asparagus harvest as asparagus plants start to produce new shoots when soil temperatures rise above 50 degrees. At optimum daytime temperatures, asparagus spears grow between 3 and 6 inches a day. Growth speed increases as the temperature rises. It had been so cold, rainy and overcast we had thought there would only be asparagus for the solo shares. HOWEVER, the sun came out Monday morning and the grass sprouted up so fast, the farmworkers were able to harvest enough for everyone to get a little taste.
