Stephanie Member Diary

Holy greens this week! This is what my partner, Brian, and I got in our MimoMex Veggie and Orchard half shares: mustard greens, red mustard greens, arugula, mizuna, spinach, broccoli, cilantro, onions, baby pumpkins, a Sugar Baby pumpkin, Empire apples, apple cider.
Monday:
Usually I try to clear out the fridge before my pickup so that there’s room for CSA goods and we don’t have any leftovers to eat (which would discourage us from cooking). That didn’t happen this weekend…we had guests over and ordered a ton of takeout one night instead of cooking, so not only did we have all those leftovers, we had a bunch of veggies that I’d been planning to cook. No room in the fridge!

Steps I took to clear out the fridge and store the share goods:
1. Drank the last of some white wine to get rid of the bottle. Need to start somewhere!
2. Finished up some takeout for dinner. No cooking tonight; clearing/storing only.
3. Cut our losses and traded some wilting cilantro for this week’s lively cilantro. Put the new cilantro in a glass with water (like a bouquet of flowers) and with a small plastic bag over the top. Old cilantro went in a bin for composting.
4. To help the rest of the greens last longer and reduce their bulk: picked out the wilted ones, trimmed off the stems, washed and spun the leaves, and packed them in plastic containers lined and layered with paper towels. Way laborious but worth it.
5. Consolidated carrots and celery with some radishes from a previous share in a FoodSaver container since they’re all supposed to be stored the same way anyway (with moisture and the air vents closed) and none of them produce ethylene.

We split a Half Monty Deluxe between three households. Two of us have been part of the Southside CSA, so we generally know that once the blueberries start, you are in blueberry heaven for a few weeks, so we use a quick recipe to make some easy breakfast muffins.

Our household stats: We are a family of four (two adults, a four-year old, and an infant) with a Week B half-share of both Veggie and Orchard. It takes us a full two weeks to use up all the produce. Sadly, Berry and Egg Share season is over. This week we enjoyed hearty meals featuring roasted potatoes, roasted butternut squash, apple crisp, hot apple cider, snake bites (IPA with cider!) and kale salad. Lots of kale salad. Veggie Monster Member Diary from Oct 28th Share Week

Share pic by katerina barry This week we got butternut squash, potatoes, red onions, carrots, kale, mustard greens, cilantro, parsley, popping corn, apple and apple cider. We have a Full Monty share; We eat mostly vegan and usually have no problem getting through our fruit and vegetables each week. This is our 5th year in the CSA, so by now there are very few surprises. We have our favorite recipes for each vegetable that we return to each year.

Full Fridge pic by Beth ArnoldThe shared: Pears, Butternut squash, Acorn squash, Carrots, Parsnips, Parsley, and Greens Galore (Kale, lettuce, arugula, and other green things I don’t know the proper name for).

granola crisp pic by Beth ArnoldThere are two approaches to cooking. The first is scientific, i.e., following a recipe. The other is improvisational, i.e., “winging it.” This week, we did a little of both. Continue reading

FUNCORE Member Diary Week #22 (Sept 23)

IMG_0279-Rs
This week from our share we picked up the following:

  • 1 doz egg
  • 3 potatoes
  • 1 bunch parsley
  • 1 bunch radishes
  • 1 bunch scallions
  • 3 green peppers
  • 1 bunch lettuce
  • 4 ears corn
  • 14 apples
  • 2 poblano peppers
  • 1 pumpkin plus a mini guy

We usually make 4 to 5 things a week with what we pick up, but this week was the week we were due to have a baby- AND WE DID! Our little man joined the world on Sept. 26th and while we are so excited to have him in our lives, we still need to eat. So we kept it simple, but big on flavor and still used everything in our weekly pick up.

Early in the week we made a big bowl of veggie and quinoa salad. Continue reading

Dramalama Member Diary - Week #21

Veg + Berry + Orchard + Egg Shares - Week of Sept 16, 2013

Marla + Adam (aka Dramalama) — Our share family size is two, consisting of me and my husband Adam, and we’ve been members of the Southside CSA since 2010. Having just moved from California where the produce is known for being fresh, I was eager to join a local CSA. A long time friend of my husband shared stories about the easy pickups at the Woods, the amazing quality of the fruits and vegetables, and of course the chance to meet other folks interested in healthy farm-fresh cooking. We were sold. The ability to choose from a variety of share packages of different sizes and prices has been very helpful, since our food budget took a hit when we made the transition to New York. This year, we chose the ‘Woods Deluxe’ package, which includes a full vegetable share & berry share and one dozen eggs and orchard share bi-weekly .

Berry Share - July 1, 2013

The berry share kicks in at the beginning of the summer. Each week, we receive *buckets* of fresh blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Due to the quantity of fresh berries we end up freezing a lot of them. But whenever we’re in the mood for a smoothie, we are ready to go. Continue reading
