Week #1 Member Diary - Stephanie J

Stephanie J. Member Diary

Happy start of the season, all! I’m excited for all the veggies, meats, berries, and eggs that lie ahead for me these next few months. I signed up for half shares of each this season for me and my partner, Brian. For this first distribution, we received only the “berry” share and egg share: 2 lbs. of asparagus and 1 dozen eggs.

Asparagus photo 2 Stephanie J

The first step was to store the asparagus well, especially since this would be a busy week for me and I knew I wouldn’t have much time to cook. I stored the asparagus like a bouquet of flowers—upright in a glass storage container with water—in the fridge and covered loosely with plastic. Continue reading →

In addition to the vegetables, we have egg shares, meat shares, and beer shares.

Sokio Member Diary - Week of June 9th

Posted on June 16, 2014 by ryan la chica

SOKIO - We are a family of three—Amanda, Mauricio and newborn Paulo who is just twelve weeks old. We pick up full vegetable, berry, orchard, and egg shares every week, and a meat share every other week. We’ve also bought large quantities of maple syrup through Southside CSA.
We joined the CSA last year, and it transformed our lives in an amazing way! We were planning our wedding celebration which happened in August, and also got pregnant a couple of months into the season. The incredibly delicious produce, fruit and meat nourished me throughout my pregnancy (we continued with the winter shares as well), and after sampling quite a lot of meat in the first few months, we ended up special ordering some lamb, steaks and sausages for our wedding reception.
It’s been fun to come back to the Woods for pickups on a weekly basis, and a great way for some of our friends who are also members to get to know Paulo.

This last week the first strawberries arrived, and that’s definitely a hallelujah feeling for me!

I was also reminded of how bountiful the shares can be as the summer kicks in—we definitely need to clear some room in our freezer! We bought a small counter height freezer last year to store all of the meat and berries we were getting, and it’s been wonderful to feast off of last season all year long. We still have some blueberries and beets from last summer and some vegetables from the winter share.

Winter Share Corn - Sweet Corn Spoonbread

Posted on February 6, 2014 by ryan la chica
Sweet Corn in Winter!!

Sweet Corn in Winter!!

One of the biggest treasures in our winter share by Winter Sun Farms is the bags of sweet corn. Not much else can brighten up your winter meals like the sweet, sunny flavor of corn. We eat it up cooked in Ronnybrook garlic butter and throw it into our pasta and soups on the regular. However, one fine night we felt like getting fancy and thanks to the awesomeness of the Smitten Kitchen blog, we rocked out this fabulous spoonbread.

Winter Sun Spicy Green Curry

During the dark days of Winter, the go-to comfort food coming out of our kitchen is curry. Thanks to our winter shares we are able to bust out some super flavorful, yummy winter curries.

The secret to the sauce!

When the street is covered in snow and the winds are howling pushing the temps down to polar levels, I find that a spicy curry is a great way to warm up the soul. Continue reading →

January Winter Sun Farm Share

January Winter Sun Farm Share

Winter Sun Vegetable Share

This month’s distribution included 6 frozen items. Typically we get 5 items plus a fresh bag of pea shoots. Unfortunately, the polar freeze has been super hard on the pea shoots. The plan as it stands is to have pea shoots - fingers crossed - in Febuary and in subsequent months. Due to the last minute loss of pea shoots from the share in January, we will get an extra frozen item in our February shares.

The January share included the following:

  • 24 oz jar of Tomato Puree from Taliaferro Farm & Williams Farm
  • Butternut Squash Puree from Black Horse Farm in Coxsackie, NY
  • Blueberries from Mead Orchards Farm in Tivoli, NY
  • Sweet Corn from Gills Farm in Hurley, NY
  • Broccoli from Shaul Farm in Middleburgh, NY
  • Cauliflower from Pedersen Farms in Seneca Castle, NY
