Sugar Ladies Member Diary for the Week of Oct 14th

The shared: Pears, Butternut squash, Acorn squash, Carrots, Parsnips, Parsley, and Greens Galore (Kale, lettuce, arugula, and other green things I don’t know the proper name for).

The sharers: We are three sweet female roommates (i.e., sugar ladies).

Palambino Member Diary for Week of Oct 7th

pic by alyssa palambinoThis is our fourth year with the Southside CSA; each week we pick up vegetables, eggs, a chicken, orchard fruit and berries, plus an armload of maple syrup when we can get it. It’s an ideal system for us – I don’t have to plan ahead or visit Whole Foods, and we’re getting a truly superior product. We used the delivery service from the Cargo Bike Collective for the first time this week, and it really tipped the experience into luxurious territory. If there were CSA Olympics, I think we’d have a gold medal winner on our hands with the Southside CSA.

Because eating in a restaurant with two small kids can be nightmarish, we prepare a simple-but-delicious dinner every night at home (pizza night is the exception, of course). These are some of the dishes we’ve made in the last week with our CSA haul: Continue reading

FUNCORE Member Diary Week #22 (Sept 23)

IMG_0279-Rs
This week from our share we picked up the following:

  • 1 doz egg
  • 3 potatoes
  • 1 bunch parsley
  • 1 bunch radishes
  • 1 bunch scallions
  • 3 green peppers
  • 1 bunch lettuce
  • 4 ears corn
  • 14 apples
  • 2 poblano peppers
  • 1 pumpkin plus a mini guy

We usually make 4 to 5 things a week with what we pick up, but this week was the week we were due to have a baby- AND WE DID! Our little man joined the world on Sept. 26th and while we are so excited to have him in our lives, we still need to eat. So we kept it simple, but big on flavor and still used everything in our weekly pick up.

Early in the week we made a big bowl of veggie and quinoa salad. Continue reading

Coffee & Donuts Member Diary Week #23 (Sept 30)

Every Monday night, the three of us look forward to a kitchen full of locally grown vegetables from MimoMex farm. It was important to us to not only eat healthier, but to get involved in our community and support our local farms. It is always a surprise to see what we will be taking home that evening, looking forward to creating dishes using fresh and seasonal produce. To help store our vegetables, we store most items in the fruit and vegetable drawers in our refrigerator, using plastic onion and tomato savers and GreenBags that help preserve the freshness and prolong the life of our herbs and leafy greens.

With this week’s September 30th CSA share from MimoMex farm, Alison, Shaina, and Kate, aka Coffee & Donuts (more on our share name later…) used this week’s items to highlight the basket’s Mexican flavors, using the corn, cilantro, red onion, and radishes to create chicken corn enchiladas with homemade green sauce! A green enchilada sauce is hard to come by in supermarkets, so we decided to make our own! To make this super easy medium spiced green enchilada sauce, we used this week’s cilantro and red onion, and previous week’s garlic, green bell peppers, jalapenos, and one habanero pepper. We found a good base recipe online, and tweaked it to make it slightly spicier.

I had a crazy busy week and I was only able to cook two meals. So, I made an effort to use as much of my share- a MimoMex Vegetable Share & Greig Farm Berry Share — as possible in both of the meals.
