FUNCORE Member Diary Week #22 (Sept 23)

IMG_0279-Rs
This week from our share we picked up the following:

  • 1 doz egg
  • 3 potatoes
  • 1 bunch parsley
  • 1 bunch radishes
  • 1 bunch scallions
  • 3 green peppers
  • 1 bunch lettuce
  • 4 ears corn
  • 14 apples
  • 2 poblano peppers
  • 1 pumpkin plus a mini guy

We usually make 4 to 5 things a week with what we pick up, but this week was the week we were due to have a baby- AND WE DID! Our little man joined the world on Sept. 26th and while we are so excited to have him in our lives, we still need to eat. So we kept it simple, but big on flavor and still used everything in our weekly pick up.

Early in the week we made a big bowl of veggie and quinoa salad. Continue reading

Coffee & Donuts Member Diary Week #23 (Sept 30)

Every Monday night, the three of us look forward to a kitchen full of locally grown vegetables from MimoMex farm. It was important to us to not only eat healthier, but to get involved in our community and support our local farms. It is always a surprise to see what we will be taking home that evening, looking forward to creating dishes using fresh and seasonal produce. To help store our vegetables, we store most items in the fruit and vegetable drawers in our refrigerator, using plastic onion and tomato savers and GreenBags that help preserve the freshness and prolong the life of our herbs and leafy greens.

With this week’s September 30th CSA share from MimoMex farm, Alison, Shaina, and Kate, aka Coffee & Donuts (more on our share name later…) used this week’s items to highlight the basket’s Mexican flavors, using the corn, cilantro, red onion, and radishes to create chicken corn enchiladas with homemade green sauce! A green enchilada sauce is hard to come by in supermarkets, so we decided to make our own! To make this super easy medium spiced green enchilada sauce, we used this week’s cilantro and red onion, and previous week’s garlic, green bell peppers, jalapenos, and one habanero pepper. We found a good base recipe online, and tweaked it to make it slightly spicier.

I had a crazy busy week and I was only able to cook two meals. So, I made an effort to use as much of my share- a MimoMex Vegetable Share & Greig Farm Berry Share — as possible in both of the meals.

Dramalama Member Diary - Week #21

Veg + Berry + Orchard + Egg Shares - Week of Sept 16, 2013

Marla + Adam (aka Dramalama) — Our share family size is two, consisting of me and my husband Adam, and we’ve been members of the Southside CSA since 2010. Having just moved from California where the produce is known for being fresh, I was eager to join a local CSA. A long time friend of my husband shared stories about the easy pickups at the Woods, the amazing quality of the fruits and vegetables, and of course the chance to meet other folks interested in healthy farm-fresh cooking. We were sold. The ability to choose from a variety of share packages of different sizes and prices has been very helpful, since our food budget took a hit when we made the transition to New York. This year, we chose the ‘Woods Deluxe’ package, which includes a full vegetable share & berry share and one dozen eggs and orchard share bi-weekly .

Berry Share - July 1, 2013

The berry share kicks in at the beginning of the summer. Each week, we receive *buckets* of fresh blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Due to the quantity of fresh berries we end up freezing a lot of them. But whenever we’re in the mood for a smoothie, we are ready to go. Continue reading

Member Diary: Caitlyn’s September 10th Share

Hi there CSAers! Our share family consists of my girlfriend Mary and I (Caitlyn), and we have the Bridge share plus a Berry share, which means we do our veggie and orchard share every other week, and berries every week. This has been going a long way towards feeding us this summer. Mary is a vegetarian, and I have recently given up meat, so we’re eating a lot of produce. We do supplement our share with trips to the Greenmarket for things like garlic, onion and herbs, along with milk and yogurt. Here’s our haul for this week:

Member Diary- Katerina’s September 3rd Share

This is our fourth year as CSA members. We have a Full Monty share. Each year it gets easier. By now we pretty much know what to do with everything and rarely get surprised by new vegetables. We cook mainly vegan at home (no meat, fish or dairy), but love the “happy” eggs we get from the farm.

We usually make a couple of big dishes each week that can then be eaten for lunch or dinner on days we don’t have time to cook. We try to come up with ideas for what to do with our fruit and veggies on Monday evening, then drop by the grocery store for extra recipe ingredients on Tuesday after work, and spend a couple of hours Tuesday or Wednesday cooking. We’re both competent cooks, so together it only takes us a few hours to turn most of our share into food for the week.

This week’s share included Eggs, Peaches, Apples, Acorn Squash, Kale, Japanese Eggplant, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Radishes, Mint and Rosemary (traded half our mint for half my sister’s rosemary, so got some of both).
