Ricker Family Member Diary Week #13

We’ve been members of Southside CSA since its founding (6 years?) but this is our first Member Diary! We are a family of three and we pick up a veggie share every week with meat and eggs every other week. This week we were super excited to see corn cobs at The Woods for the first time this season.

I like to use the corn right away so the first thing I did was make a corn salsa that I could quickly throw on top of dishes throughout the week- it ended up in quesadillas, on pizza and in salads and I still have enough left over that it will probably last another week or two.

Along the same lines, I also made a veggie pickle slaw early in the week inspired by this Smitten Kitchen recipe to throw into dishes throughout the week. Our version used up carrots, cucumbers and celery. It’s great to bring to bbq’s!

LEGS Member Diary for Week #6

pic by georgie greville

This is our 5th year with the delicious and lovely Southside CSA- we are a 2 person (soon to be 3) operation and get the Full Monty Deluxe. Now that I am pregnant, I am more grateful than ever to have access to amazing quality eggs, fruit and produce from a such a reliable source. This week we got a dozen huge, healthy eggs and a big handful of fresh asparagus- we are in to asparagus and have had no problem eating it for weeks- they are so great in scrambled eggs, frittatas, salads and soups.

Member Diary #21 - Kline

My husband Brett and I (Katie) have a Woods Deluxe Share and we use it to make all of our meals 5-6 days out of the week. In our share this week, we received: 1 bunch kale, 1 head of lettuce, 1 bucket of apples + 4 more apples, 4 pears, 1 acorn squash, 1 dozen eggs, 4 ears of corn, 2 onions, 3 potatoes, 4 green peppers & 4 cubano peppers. Newly wed, I am thoroughly enjoying preparing our CSA veggies with many new kitchen gadgets from local store Whisk. Brett also got us a supply of meat (chicken and spare ribs) from the Meat Hook, so it has been good feasting this week! We average 2-3 veggie meals and 2-3 meaty meals a week for dinner. We use these crazy “as seen on TV” green bags to keep our produce fresh for the whole week. It sounds odd, but I think they work - I grew up using them for our farmers market produce in California. They are easy to wash and reuse. As you’ll see below, I used some veggies from the previous week and they were still good! Continue reading

My apartment is on the Domino plan: full veg. and orchard, and 1/2 eggs. My two roommates and I share our weekly pickup. We take turns going to distribution on Mondays, sometimes we all cook together, sometimes we cook separately. Here’s what I made for the house this past week. Continue reading

Member Diary #18 — Georgie

My full Veggie share: 1 lb Poblano Peppers, 1/2 lb Chilaca Peppers, 1 lb Tomatoes, 1 head of Cabbage, 1 head Red Leaf Lettuce (I took 2 by accident…ahem), 1 bunch Cilantro, 1 Acorn Squash, 1 Butternut Squash, 1 bunch Lemongrass

My Egg share: A dozen nice healthy eggs

My Fruit share: 1 qt. Apple cider, 1 lb Golden Delicious Apples, 1 lb Crispin Apples, 1 lb Empire Apples

Hello! The theme of this week for me was definitely “Everything tastes better with roasted Poblano or Chilaca peppers”- they are both so mild and delicious when roasted on an open flame. I also used the gigantic head of cabbage in quite a few dishes so that was a hero ingredient too. I love cooking with CSA food- everything is always so fresh and tasty. Here are some of the things I made this week from my share. Continue reading

A few weeks ago during distribution, some people were wondering what to do with their cabbages. Member Katerina mentioned her favorite South Indian Cabbage recipe, from Madhur Jaffrey’s World Vegetarian cookbook. Continue reading
